the barest sound
we are gasping on the banks
like dying fish eating air
oily smoke pushing
underneath the edges of us
we buried that boy
inside of her
a tiny box of whale bone
with a body like a heart
in a little darkness
throats rusted, stomachs
full of human flesh
the biggest whales pinned
to the pinboard of the
universe
